Q&A

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION

Deciding to get a hair transplant is a major decision, with many different aspects to consider. From the initial consultation all the way to post procedure we receive a variety of questions regarding hair transplants. The following are some Frequently Asked Questions about the procedure.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON THE PROCEDURE

Who can benefit from hair transplant?

Anyone who has permanent hair loss may be a potential candidate for hair transplant surgery. This includes: – Men with male pattern baldness. – Women with female pattern hair loss. – Men or women who would like to restore or modify their hairline. – Individuals with scarring from injuries such as face lifts, skin burns, or skin diseases. – Individuals who want to re-shape their beard or those who desire thicker eyebrows (facial hair transplant). – Men or women who want hair restoration in specific areas of their body. Individuals who would like to fix “old plugs” from previous hair transplant procedures.

What is a FUE hair transplant?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the modern technique for Hair Transplantation. Using a specialized extraction instrument, hair follicles are removed from the donor area. These follicles are then transferred to the recipient area using a special micro surgical needle. The surgeon will puncture the area of the scalp that will receive the grafts. The grafts are inserted at an angle with a specific density. This is to ensure a natural hair pattern is achieved.

How long does the procedure take?

At SD Hair Restoration Clinic, this procedure usually takes between 6-8 hours for a one-day session and 12-16 hours in total for a two-day session. The duration of the procedure depends on the number of grafts required and the hair characteristics. The recipient will be updated regarding the number of grafts being transplanted during the surgical process and any questions regarding their progress are welcome at any time.

What can I do during the transplantation?

We provide our patients with iPads to watch movies. We find this to be more comfortable than reading a book. Patients may also listen to music via their phone during the procedure. This will assist in making the procedure more enjoyable.

Is the Neograft® hair transplant procedure painful?

A local anesthetic is administered, making the procedure relatively painless. The FUE treatment itself leaves you with virtually no post-surgical pain and discomfort.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON HAIR TRANSPLANT PROCESS AND POST TREATMENT

What should I wear?

Patients are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing. It is important to wear a wide neck t-shirt, or a zippered or buttoned down shirt as these are easier to remove after the procedure has taken place.

Are there meal options during the procedure?

We will provide lunch options for you at the clinic. If you have any dietary requirements please email us 7 days prior to your transplantation date.

What happens directly after?

Each client will be advised of their own personalized after care program which will include taking a 4-day course of antibiotics to ensure the prevention of infection. It is strongly recommended that a hat be worn for protection when going out in direct sunlight for the two weeks post procedure.

How long is the recovery?

After the procedure, it is recommended that you rest and not return to work for about 7 days, depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing characteristics.
